This is the first work to look at the entire history of public transport in London, from its beginnings in the early 19th century up to the present day. Comprehensively illustrated, it covers all phases of the public transport system, from river wherries, horse drawn vehicles and the Victorian steam railways up to the modern electric underground, the rebirth of trams and an advanced bus network. The extensive archives of London's Transport Museum provide a rich variety of images covering many of London's icons, such as the classic Underground map, the roundel and the familiar red bus, whilst contemporary photographs, drawings and engravings document the great engineering feats of the 19th century as well as the most recent architectural achievements of the Jubilee Line Extension. The huge wealth and scope of material in this book demonstrates how intimately the history of transport is intertwined with that of London.
Educated in England and Australia, Sheila Taylor has been curator of the Photographic Collection at London's Transport Museum since 1986. She is the author of A Journey through Time.
